HTC Touch HD2 To Be An Android Set

Posted by: GadGet | Comments (0)

HtcdroidFanboys the world over swooned over the HTC Touch HD when it launched last year, but word is that HTC’s planning on making a major change to its high-res handset for the sequel: it’s switching to Android. That’s at least the hot whisper ’round the tubes this afternoon, and while that would ordinarily be enough to make the ‘droidboys to go crazy, there’s even more — the CPU is reportedly a 628MHz Qualcomm chip, not the slightly overtaxed 528MHz number we’ve seen in every other Android handset to date. Sure, it’s just a measly 100MHz, but if that’s enough to make Sense and HD video on the 3.8-inch 480 x 800 display run smoothly we’ll be all grins. If any of this is true, that is.

HTC Mega Materializes Again

Posted by: GadGet | Comments (0)

htc-mega-screenshotHTC’s Mega certainly isn’t the most exciting of the company’s upcoming products to leak lately, but it’s looking likely that it’ll have one of the nicer price tags on it for a Window Mobile 6.5 device. Another screenshot has surfaced that matches up with one we saw earlier and shows off more of the sides and back. Along with it comes a new list of specs — not too shabby, but nothing too exciting, either. According to ai.rs blog, it has WCDMA/HSPA and quad-band GSM support, a 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, AGPS, and still the 2.8-inch QVGA screen and 528MHz Qualcomm processor we heard about previously. If you’re already playing with the Mega’s TouchFLO 2D-infused ROM, consider this supplementary material for getting a more thorough idea of what the actual phone will look like when it does come out — whenever that is.

HTCHeroSesnseThe HTC Magic is getting an official update to the Hero’s overhauled, fairly wonderful “Sense” UI, but there’s a catch: the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, which is basically the same freakin’ phone, probably won’t get the update, for lame licensing reasons.

To be fair, we should have expected this: Back in June, there were reports that HTC representatives had been talking about a licensing issue that would keep any proprietary modifications off of phones with “With Google” branding. Sense is all HTC, and the MyTouch 3G is slapped with a Google logo, so this forthcoming update, which was announced at a press conference in Taiwan and will be available from HTC’s website at some point in the near future, sounds like a distinctly foreign interest.

It’s worth holding out for possible “clarifications” on this one—please, HTC, Google, or both, say something! Soothe us!—but this hemisphere’s outlook isn’t so great. Enjoy turning your Magics into Heroes for free, Eurojerks. At least we’ve got our homebrew.

Update: Another possible issue: The MyTouch 3G and Vodafone-labeled Magics have slightly less RAM than their HTC-branded counterparts, which means even the best hacked Hero ROMs don’t run especially well. Yeah, not looking so great for ol’ MyTouch here

HTC Hero On Sale Tomorrow at Orange UK

Posted by: GadGet | Comments (0)

htc-hero-graphite-orangeWe may have scored HTC’s latest Android-infused device for a brief window of time, but if you’re hoping to snag one for keeps, you’ll need to jet over to the UK and sign away your cellular soul to Orange. Based on a brief but pointed tweet from a carrier representative, the HTC Hero will be “available from Orange UK retail stores [starting] tomorrow.” The phone is already up on the operator’s website in a delightful graphite hue, and the price of £0.00 on a pay monthly contract sure is luscious. So much for T-Mobile Germany getting a jump on everyone, huh?

Verizon Gets HTC Ozone

Posted by: GadGet | Comments (0)

htcozoneHTC makes some of the most desirable smartphones on the market. In fact, it was the company that made the first Android-powered smartphone to hit the U.S. market — the T-mobile G1. HTC had an event this week where it introduced its Hero smartphone and now it has unveiled another phone bound for the States.

Verizon Wireless will be getting the HTC Ozone smartphone. The easy to use smartphone has a bargain price of $49.99 after a $70 mail-in rebate and new contract. Features of the phone include a QWERTY keyboard and multiple connectivity options.

The device will work on the Verizon 3G network and offers Wi-Fi connectivity as well. Ozone supports VZ Navigator, Visual Voice Mail, Email, and IM. Power for the Ozone comes from a 1500 mAh battery. The Ozone can be ordered online starting on June 29 and will be in stores on July 13.

HTC Hero Hands On

Posted by: GadGet | Comments (0)

htc-london-dscWe’re going to need some real time with the device to make a final opinion, but we’re cautiously optimistic that HTC has a winner with its new Hero. Here’s what we’ve got from our first looks at the phone in London and NY:

  • The beveled edges along the back makes the handset sit comfortably in the hand, and while the teflon coat doesn’t necessarily feel revolutionary, it’s going to make a world of difference after a couple of months riding in our grubby pockets. It’s certainly solid, but much more so than other “brick” phones.
  • The Sense UI (or as HTC terms it, “user experience”) riding a capacitive touchscreen offers a people-centric approach to managing your information that is absolutely dreamy at first blush — though it shares a lot of TouchFLO heritage. In fact, HTC promises to have a very similar Sense-branded experience for Windows Mobile.
  • The on-screen keyboard also seems quite useable with a nice simulated haptic forced-feedback bounce when you strike each key in either landscape or portrait mode (which can naturally be deactivated). HTC has built its own touch keyboard from the ground up, and in our brief couple of tests we’d say it’s probably the best touchscreen typing experience we’ve ever felt. It never lags behind, and has great colorful visual cues for its auto-corrected words — green means it’s suggesting a correctly spelled word, red means we’ve gone off the beaten path, and the T9-style multiple suggestions are heavenly.
