Here’s Tai Chiem’s (a designer) vision of the PlayStation 4. It will embed a high end touch screen rather than the existing glossy body that the current generation is using (not since the Slim…), looking at the images, even the controller has some touch screen in it, how cool is that? The design uses a transparent material that could we hope is very hard plastic as controllers get tossed around a lot. The design exists in black or white. Note that this is a concept, not an upcoming product.

PS3 Slim Popping Up All Over The US

Since we first heard about Florida going Slim with its PS3s, we’ve gotten numerous reports abut the console showing up on retail shelves in Best Buys and GameStops across these 48 contiguous states. We’ve also heard whispers that brick-and-mortar Sony Style locations are getting shipments and will be unleashing to the masses soon after — not to mention Amazon’s still promising at least some deliveries for tomorrow. Our calls to Sony haven’t been returned yet, but it seems like the release date now is more or less “as soon as your local electronics store gets a shipment.” Another shot of the boxes in the wild ,and let us know below if and where you’ve managed to spot one!

Amazon Says PS3 Slim Already Facing Supply Shortages, Sony Disagrees

Been holding off on that PS3 Slim pre-order, waiting for Sony to tell you that this whole PS2 backwards compatibility issue was just a big misunderstanding, and of course Sony will keep trying its best to reintroduce PS2 compatibility into the PS3? Well, you might want to rethink that strategy, cowboy, because Amazon is warning of “shortages of this product across the US.” It’s already limiting Slim sales to one per person, and has a more lax five-Slims-per-person strategy in the UK. Meanwhile, Sony in Europe is saying not to worry, since it has “trucks and trailers” of the new console already on the road . We just don’t know who to believe these days, but if you’re not prepared to wait past September 1st for a crack at the Slim, you’ve got some deciding to do

Sony Unveils Slimmer PS3: $300, Lands In September

Hardly a surprise, but Sony got on stage today at GamesCom and confirmed what we’ve all known deep down in our hearts: the new, slimmer PS3 is really real. It’ll be out in the first week of September (September 1 in North America and Europe, September 3 for Japan), and will retail for $300 (or 300 Euro, or 29,980 Yen). It’s smaller and lighter, has a 120GB HDD, and packs “all the same features” of the regular PS3 while consuming 34 percent less power and taking up 32 percent less space. Existing PS3 SKUs have their prices dropped a hundie apiece tomorrow in anticipation, so be sure to grab a space heater while you’ve still got a shot — though we’re not sure why you’d pay $300 for an 80GB PS3 when you can wait a couple weeks and get 120GB in a cuter package. The new 3.0 firmware will be released concurrently with the PS3 slim, which should provide a breath of fresh air for existing machines. Other new features of the PS3 slim include BRAVIA Sync, which allows you to control the PS3 XMB over HDMI through your BRAVIA TV remote, and System Standby to shut off the PS3 when the BRAVIA TV is off. Sony also claims this new machine will run more quietly than existing PS3 systems, which is good news for people who like to watch movies or have conversations in the general vicinity of their game console. There’s also a Vertical Stand, which will retail for $24. Not so awesome is Sony’s removal of the Install Other OS feature… farewell, Linux.
