Story
Left 4 Dead 2 is set at roughly the same time as the original – just after the outbreak that turned most of the population into various zombie mutants. Players assume the role of four new "Survivors," each with their own personality and new dialog. The game leads these "Survivors" through the southeastern region of the US - from Savannah, Georgia through the bayou country, and climaxing in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

Gameplay
Just as with the original Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 is a first-person shooter which pits players against hordes of zombie-like enemies. As you would expect in a scenario where you are regularly surrounded by masses of the undead, it is very good thing to have plenty of help, as well as weapons at your disposal, and Left 4 Dead 2 has players covered on both accounts. The game features several multiplayer options including 2-8 player online and offline support in several modes seen in the first game, including Campaign, Versus, and Survival, as well as the new Scavenge Mode. This new multiplayer option tasks players, in the role of survivors to find a limited number of fuel canisters hidden in a level in order to keep their individual generators going, while other players in the role of the infected try to stop them. In addition the game features very strong co-op play support, with 2-player support locally and 2-4 player support online.

The game features a wealth of melee weapons and additional items handy for battling enemies up-close and personal. Along with melee weapons seen in the first game, players can look forward to wielding new weapons like axes, chainsaws, frying pans, etc. Firearms are also available, but seeing as zombie fighting usually requires a little elbow grease, melee weapons are the mainstay. In addition, players can carry other useful items, including a variety of throwing weapons and several different kinds of support items, like flashlights to startle enemies and light the way in dark environments and healing items like first aid kit and defibrillator kits.

Customize with AI Director 2.0
Introducing the AI Director 2.0, Left 4 Dead 2's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Not as great as it could have been

This game is not as great as it could have been. The game gave me an error that was undefined after about two weeks of play time. In addition, the game also would like for me to have turned off my virus protection (like I would do that - I already lost a laptop due to turning off the virus protection).

Some in the gaming community were understanding when it came to the multiplayer (read this as 90% of the game). More did not. The "die hard" teams tended to vote people off the server when they saw the additional players added were new to the game. This lead to a long, long learning curve and, after getting the errors mentioned above, a quick toss of the game into the garbage bag.

The graphics in the game are good, but the errors were just too much to take for this game.
It's just a great game.

It's a wonderful game. i have never played the first l4d, but this one is a co-op great game...the single mode player it's not great at all, but it has several multiplayer mods that makes you spent a lot of time playing, if you like gore, zombies and survival horror buy it. if you like to play as a team buy it,if you have no internet access forget this game !!
Not nearly as good as the first one

The first Left 4 Dead was ground breaking and introduced some great advances and cool features. The sequel had high hopes but just didn't even begin to deliver. The rough spots in the original were not improved on much, such as breathtakingly stupid AI on your computer helpers, getting stuck on anything when trying to run, etc. The melee weapons were a nice improvement but otherwise the game is incredibly poorly done. The new monsters are not all that interesting though their BS potential is immense. Perhaps the simplest way to summarize it is this: I not only wouldn't recommend it to a friend, but I am sorry that I bought it myself.
Great game for people who love co-op gaming and killing zombies

Left 4 Dead 2 is a very satisfying cooperative survive-the-zombie-apocalypse game that is especially fun to play with friends.

This game took the formula from the original L4D then added new weapons (including melee), added new zombies, introduced new survivors, and changed the setting.
I thought the first one was great.

One of my favorite games of all time. The first Left 4 Dead feels more like a beta version to this.

I know some of the reviewers mentioned that this is just an expansion pack, but I thought to myself and wondered if they even tried the game. IMO, the game is more then an expansion pack. The Campaigns come together like a plot. You have many weapons to choose from and there not just the same old boring ones over and over. You could add a laser sight to them to make your weapon more accurate. Melee weapons were added which is a bonus for me, because the chainsaw just rocks! (Warning! Runs out of gas quickly when you get carried away). It has better physics then the first one, the pipe bomb is by far the coolest effect on here, body parts fly all over and guts come out. Added special infected like the Jockey, Spitter and Charger. Special zombies for certain campaigns that are a little bit hard to kill from the normal infected. Different missions to do, when planning an escape for an escape vehicle. I could pretty much go on and on about it, but I don't want to spoil any more of it. Believe me when I say that it's not an expansion pack, it's in all new different game.

Buyer Beware: If you do not like "Steam" and do not plan on installing on your computer in the future, then this is not for you.
Good games

Good Games. Different enough from the first left for dead to justify the second one.
Great!

If you've played L4D1, this game is totally worth it. Pretty much every aspect of the game is tweaked for the better!
Improvements Across the Board

Left 4 Dead 2, put simply, improves on every single aspect of the preceding game. The weapons are better, the infected are more diverse, the director is better, the levels are more fun. The only, and I mean ONLY thing L4D1 has over L4D2 is the main characters, who are generally more likable (and Francis is awesome). Otherwise the game is awesome, especially if you're a fan of the first one. It may seem to some like an unnecessary attempt at re-selling what should be a map pack, but it really is a sequel, a full game on it's own.
It is a fun and challenging game.

Since i haven't played Left For Dead 1, i can't compare except from what I've heard, which is that it is a great improvement from the first. i enjoyed it though it seemed pretty short, and the bots do piss you off st times. like why can't they pick up pipe bombs or Molotov.....great game with friends and online and by yourself. definitively recommend.

I haven't even played this game. Not from a lack of trying however. When I install the game I get a lovely message:
"Steam server is unavailable

Your computer is either currently unable to reach the Steam servers, or the service may be temporarily disabled. Please try again later."

When I goto the steam support website I get:
"Help Desk Error

Our help desk is currently disabled. Normal operations will resume shortly. Thank you for your patience."

Browsing around the internet I find this is a common problem with all steam games.

I have had it up to here with these gaming companies and their ridiculous DRM policies. NOT ONE, anti pirating, invasive, worthless DRM has stopped pirates from copying games. NOT ONE. Any game in the world has been cracked and exploited and copies can be downloaded for free. So why do these companies insist on trying to stop them?!?!? THE CANNOT STOP PIRATES.. PIRATES WILL ALWAYS FIND A WAY!!! So why punish your paying customers with unessisary DRM that prevents me from popping in a DVD and playing the damn game?

I refuse to purchase another game from valve that uses steam. In fact I might just return this copy and pirate the game... at least then it will work...
